Installation and Operating Suggestions

To assist you in operating and testing your Martek Power Abbott power module, we include the following items. Also see 10 Essential Guidelines for Testing, Installing and Operating Martek Power Abbott Power Modules for more information:
1. Final Test Data
This lists the performance data recorded by our quality assurance staff during final inspection and testing of your power module. Parameters measured include input and output voltage and current, line and load regulation, ripple or distortion, and output frequency (for inverters).
2. Testing Instructions and Application Notes
This pamphlet list general instructions for testing and using the power module. It includes maximum ratings for heat dissipation, mounting instructions, environmental requirements, and similar.
3. Thermal Compound
This special, grease-like material fills the minute air gaps between mating surfaces and enables the power supply to transfer a maximum amount of heat to the sink. Apply thermal compound to the base of the power module before mounting it to the heat sink.
4. Mounting Studs (Upon Customer Request)
Standard mounting hardware accompanying each unit consists of one-inch long steel studs, with slotted cup points, upon customer request.

Mounting
Martek Power Abbott power modules will operate safely in most mounting orientations, subject to the following guidelines:
1. Mounting Surfaces
Mounting surfaces must be smooth, flat to within 0.005, cover the entire baseplate of the module, and have adequate heat dissipation characteristics. (To facilitate heat transfer, we recommend the use of thermal compound, covering at least 95% of the contact area, applied between the baseplate of the unit and the mounting surface.)
2. Stud Mounting
Most Martek Power Abbott power modules come with standard 10-32 stud-mounting hardware and some with 6-32 or 4-40  hardware. Torque the nut on the 10-32 mounting studs to 15 inch-pounds, 6 inch-pounds on the 6-32, and 4 inch pounds on the 4-40 studs.  Customer furnished mounting studs should not exceed a penetration of five threads.
Label
Every Martek Power Abbott power supply has a nameplate that specifies pin designations, electrical ratings, and the recommended input fuse rating. Carefully read the label and the instruction pamphlet accompanying each module before attempting to use it.
Wiring
The proper wire guage to use in connecting a power module depends on the length of the wire needed, the ambient temperature, and the rated input and output current of the module. We recommend 1,000 circular mils per ampere as a general rule to use in choosing wire guage. For additional information, refer to the "Conductor Size and Resistance" topic of the Power Supply Applications Notes.
